Narrative:
As we taxied towards the hold short line of runway 24, the tower controller asked us if we were ready for departure. We informed ATC that we would need 'another min,' then we were instructed to go to the waiting area until ready. After completing all checklists the copilot called ATC and informed them that we were now ready. We were both under the impression that we had been given 'taxi into position and hold' instruction. That's what we thought we heard. As we crossed the hold short line, ATC said 'citation stop.' I looked to my left and saw another aircraft on about a 1 1/2 to 2 mi final. We stopped. A moment later the aircraft landed without incidence. Our wings were past the line but our tail was still over the hold short line. We were cleared for takeoff and the rest of the flight was uneventful. After landing, I decided to call teterboro tower. I asked the controller who cleared us for takeoff if he had asked us to hold short of runway 24. He said that there may have been a miscom.
