Narrative:
On takeoff, switched to departure control. Instructed to turn to 120 degrees, climb to 5000 ft. ATC called traffic 12 O'clock position, X mi, 6000 ft. Traffic was in sight and captain advised ATC. ATC then instructed maintain visual separation, climb to 15000 ft. At that point, traffic appeared close, so I did not climb immediately to observe traffic, then started a climb. We then got a TA, followed by an RA to descend. At about 5300 ft I started a descent at about 3000 FPM and leveled off at 4500 ft. The captain advised ATC of the RA and escape action taken. We then climbed on course. I think ATC should not have turned us into traffic at night and issue a visual separation climb for our aircraft and descent for the other.

Title: MD80 FLC IS ISSUED A CLB INTO DSNDING TFC AND EXPERIENCES AN RA. FLC COMPLIED WITH RA INSTRUCTIONS THEN CONTINUED CLB.
Narrative: ON TKOF, SWITCHED TO DEP CTL. INSTRUCTED TO TURN TO 120 DEGS, CLB TO 5000 FT. ATC CALLED TFC 12 O'CLOCK POS, X MI, 6000 FT. TFC WAS IN SIGHT AND CAPT ADVISED ATC. ATC THEN INSTRUCTED MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION, CLB TO 15000 FT. AT THAT POINT, TFC APPEARED CLOSE, SO I DID NOT CLB IMMEDIATELY TO OBSERVE TFC, THEN STARTED A CLB. WE THEN GOT A TA, FOLLOWED BY AN RA TO DSND. AT ABOUT 5300 FT I STARTED A DSCNT AT ABOUT 3000 FPM AND LEVELED OFF AT 4500 FT. THE CAPT ADVISED ATC OF THE RA AND ESCAPE ACTION TAKEN. WE THEN CLBED ON COURSE. I THINK ATC SHOULD NOT HAVE TURNED US INTO TFC AT NIGHT AND ISSUE A VISUAL SEPARATION CLB FOR OUR ACFT AND DSCNT FOR THE OTHER.
