Narrative:
During initial climb, thought tower was a little late in handoff. Asked tower if they had a heading for us. Reply was 'there is no heading, just do the hoover.' my assumption was to go boulder VOR, which I had confused as hoover. When in actuality the tower had said 'just do the hoover,' meaning the hoover departure. After handoff, departure control asked where we were going. Replied hoover. Controller said there was no hoover. We checked chart and responded boulder. Controller asked where we got clearance for turn. Responded that tower said to go to hoover,. Controller subsequently cleared flight direct wyldd with verbal reprimand. Conclusion: confusion over the name hoover versus boulder which are both synonymous with the same thing along with the expectation of an assigned heading led to the early turn. Possibly the change of name from hoover to boulder departure and removal of (or other assigned heading) in the departure from runway 25L/right might alleviate future confused departure mistakes.

Title: AN MD83 PIC MAKES AN EARLY TURN FROM RWY HDG DURING A HOOVER 1 DEP PROC FROM LAS, NV.
Narrative: DURING INITIAL CLB, THOUGHT TWR WAS A LITTLE LATE IN HDOF. ASKED TWR IF THEY HAD A HDG FOR US. REPLY WAS 'THERE IS NO HDG, JUST DO THE HOOVER.' MY ASSUMPTION WAS TO GO BOULDER VOR, WHICH I HAD CONFUSED AS HOOVER. WHEN IN ACTUALITY THE TWR HAD SAID 'JUST DO THE HOOVER,' MEANING THE HOOVER DEP. AFTER HDOF, DEP CTL ASKED WHERE WE WERE GOING. REPLIED HOOVER. CTLR SAID THERE WAS NO HOOVER. WE CHKED CHART AND RESPONDED BOULDER. CTLR ASKED WHERE WE GOT CLRNC FOR TURN. RESPONDED THAT TWR SAID TO GO TO HOOVER,. CTLR SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED FLT DIRECT WYLDD WITH VERBAL REPRIMAND. CONCLUSION: CONFUSION OVER THE NAME HOOVER VERSUS BOULDER WHICH ARE BOTH SYNONYMOUS WITH THE SAME THING ALONG WITH THE EXPECTATION OF AN ASSIGNED HDG LED TO THE EARLY TURN. POSSIBLY THE CHANGE OF NAME FROM HOOVER TO BOULDER DEP AND REMOVAL OF (OR OTHER ASSIGNED HDG) IN THE DEP FROM RWY 25L/R MIGHT ALLEVIATE FUTURE CONFUSED DEP MISTAKES.
