Narrative:
We received clearance: '...to 290 degrees, turn right heading 300 degrees, intercept haray transition, traffic will pass above you.' during climb through 8000+ ft, received a TCASII TA. Noted on TCASII that traffic was approximately 1500 ft above and to our left. We were in an aggressive right turn to 300 degrees (from 250 degrees), and it appeared the traffic would not be a factor. Immediately thereafter, the TCASII alert changed to an RA (initially, reduce climb, then descend). Almost simultaneous with the RA, we received clearance from ATC to descend to 8000 ft. We immediately complied. The flight continued to houston uneventfully. Note: similar call signs were on the frequency, we were 'air carrier X abcd,' and there was also an 'air carrier X cdab.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-300 FLC OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT AND CONFLICT WITH DHC8 IN CLT AIRSPACE. RPTR STATES SIMILAR CALL SIGNS A FACTOR.
Narrative: WE RECEIVED CLRNC: '...TO 290 DEGS, TURN R HDG 300 DEGS, INTERCEPT HARAY TRANSITION, TFC WILL PASS ABOVE YOU.' DURING CLB THROUGH 8000+ FT, RECEIVED A TCASII TA. NOTED ON TCASII THAT TFC WAS APPROX 1500 FT ABOVE AND TO OUR L. WE WERE IN AN AGGRESSIVE R TURN TO 300 DEGS (FROM 250 DEGS), AND IT APPEARED THE TFC WOULD NOT BE A FACTOR. IMMEDIATELY THEREAFTER, THE TCASII ALERT CHANGED TO AN RA (INITIALLY, REDUCE CLB, THEN DSND). ALMOST SIMULTANEOUS WITH THE RA, WE RECEIVED CLRNC FROM ATC TO DSND TO 8000 FT. WE IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED. THE FLT CONTINUED TO HOUSTON UNEVENTFULLY. NOTE: SIMILAR CALL SIGNS WERE ON THE FREQ, WE WERE 'ACR X ABCD,' AND THERE WAS ALSO AN 'ACR X CDAB.'
