Narrative:
I was on an IFR flight plan landing at hnl. I was cleared for a visual approach to runway 4R which is a normal (trade wind) procedure. The winds and runway changed and I was told by ATC to expect runway 22L. I approached the airport, as directed by ATC, much higher than normal and not allowed to begin my descent until I was very close to the airport. I was cleared to land on runway 22L. However, the winds had not changed and I had a 10+ KT tailwind on final to the runway. I was high and fast and needed to reduce speed and altitude quickly. This need to reduce speed and altitude at the very last moments distracted me, by focusing my attention on reducing speed and altitude. I landed on runway 26R and immediately realized my mistake and exited that runway as soon as possible. There were no other aircraft waiting for departure, or on approach, to runway 26R. ATC was silent until I exited runway 26R. I did not endanger other aircraft because of this incursion. In the future, I will always set my autoplt 'heading bug' to the assigned runway, so as to confirm my intent to land on the correct runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A MOONEY PLT IS DISTRACTED BY BEING TOO HIGH AND FAST AND LANDS ON WRONG RWY.
Narrative: I WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN LNDG AT HNL. I WAS CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 4R WHICH IS A NORMAL (TRADE WIND) PROC. THE WINDS AND RWY CHANGED AND I WAS TOLD BY ATC TO EXPECT RWY 22L. I APCHED THE ARPT, AS DIRECTED BY ATC, MUCH HIGHER THAN NORMAL AND NOT ALLOWED TO BEGIN MY DSCNT UNTIL I WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE ARPT. I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 22L. HOWEVER, THE WINDS HAD NOT CHANGED AND I HAD A 10+ KT TAILWIND ON FINAL TO THE RWY. I WAS HIGH AND FAST AND NEEDED TO REDUCE SPD AND ALT QUICKLY. THIS NEED TO REDUCE SPD AND ALT AT THE VERY LAST MOMENTS DISTRACTED ME, BY FOCUSING MY ATTN ON REDUCING SPD AND ALT. I LANDED ON RWY 26R AND IMMEDIATELY REALIZED MY MISTAKE AND EXITED THAT RWY ASAP. THERE WERE NO OTHER ACFT WAITING FOR DEP, OR ON APCH, TO RWY 26R. ATC WAS SILENT UNTIL I EXITED RWY 26R. I DID NOT ENDANGER OTHER ACFT BECAUSE OF THIS INCURSION. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL ALWAYS SET MY AUTOPLT 'HEADING BUG' TO THE ASSIGNED RWY, SO AS TO CONFIRM MY INTENT TO LAND ON THE CORRECT RWY.
