Narrative:

On the morning of feb/mon/03 at approximately XA00, I was asked by a co-worker to assist him on aircraft with a flap asymmetry problem. We went out to the aircraft and tried to cycle the flaps from 40 degrees upwardly. Flaps would immediately split indications and stop. Reset asymmetry and kept flaps at 40 degrees. We returned to office to read maintenance manual and check history on aircraft. While I was in the office, 2 other mechanics went out to inspect the flaps. I was called out a short time later to return to the aircraft. At the aircraft I was directed over to the left wing and should the damage that had occurred due to the left inboard aft flap assembly shifting into and damaging the aft wing to body fairing and associated parts. I returned to the office to notify the appropriate persons. Supplemental information from acn 573920: went to back of aircraft and noticed l-hand flap way out of rig and pulled into the fillet panels. I then reported to my superiors.
