Narrative:

The captain (PF) departed runway 8R at katl with instructions to fly the runway heading until the MM, then heading 070 degrees. The captain had the mindset of turning at the OM, having set up the NDB frequency for the LOM in the radios. The crew continued on the runway heading past the MM until about 3 mi east of the airport. Departure control advised the crew that he needed the 070 degree heading and then re-assigned a 060 degree heading. The crew immediately turned left to 060 degree heading and proceeded without further incident. There was no traffic conflict. Perhaps including the phrase 'expect to turn at the MM' would be helpful on the atlanta 5 departure chart. The captain did brief the departure to the first officer describing the turn at the marker for noise abatement, however, a better description of the OM (versus MM) may have been caught by the first officer had the captain gone into further detail. (I think the captain would have caught the mistake as well.)

Title: CL65 DEPARTING ATL MISSES ATC ASSIGNED DEP TURN.

Narrative: THE CAPT (PF) DEPARTED RWY 8R AT KATL WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO FLY THE RWY HDG UNTIL THE MM, THEN HDG 070 DEGS. THE CAPT HAD THE MINDSET OF TURNING AT THE OM, HAVING SET UP THE NDB FREQ FOR THE LOM IN THE RADIOS. THE CREW CONTINUED ON THE RWY HDG PAST THE MM UNTIL ABOUT 3 MI E OF THE ARPT. DEP CTL ADVISED THE CREW THAT HE NEEDED THE 070 DEG HDG AND THEN RE-ASSIGNED A 060 DEG HDG. THE CREW IMMEDIATELY TURNED L TO 060 DEG HDG AND PROCEEDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT. PERHAPS INCLUDING THE PHRASE 'EXPECT TO TURN AT THE MM' WOULD BE HELPFUL ON THE ATLANTA 5 DEP CHART. THE CAPT DID BRIEF THE DEP TO THE FO DESCRIBING THE TURN AT THE MARKER FOR NOISE ABATEMENT, HOWEVER, A BETTER DESCRIPTION OF THE OM (VERSUS MM) MAY HAVE BEEN CAUGHT BY THE FO HAD THE CAPT GONE INTO FURTHER DETAIL. (I THINK THE CAPT WOULD HAVE CAUGHT THE MISTAKE AS WELL.)
