Narrative:
The purpose of the flight was an orientation flight in a cap plane. The PIC (me) explained the various phases of flight to the cadets. On this day, there was just 1 cadet and me. Our syllabus included demonstrations of aircraft stability and control. After finishing the run-up, the cadet asked me a question, which I was in the process of answering while moving to the hold short line. During this distraction, I realized I had taxied past the hold short lines and was almost on the runway numbers. I had not yet informed sch tower I was ready, so I stopped quickly and called tower. He mentioned my position, which I acknowledged and he wrote it off to snow obscuring the hold short line. I know my distraction with the cadet was the root cause and will not let it happen again.
