Narrative:
I was flying with a cfii, and am a CFI myself. We filed and received an IFR clearance from stockton, ca, to napa, ca. We were told by stockton tower to taxi into position and hold for runway 29L and we did so. While holding in position, the tower told us to 'maintain runway heading on the go.' I read back to the tower, 'maintain runway heading, cleared for takeoff runway 29L' and began the takeoff roll. The tower didn't respond with a correction. After rotation, the tower said that radar approach hadn't released us yet and to stay in left closed traffic to runway 29L. We were in VFR conditions and were cleared for the option to runway 29L. After a touch-and-go, we were then cleared by tower to proceed with our IFR clearance. Thinking back, I realized that the tower didn't say the words 'cleared for takeoff.' my mind set was on takeoff and hearing the tower say, 'maintain runway heading on the go,' I initiated the takeoff roll. I realized that I shouldn't assume a takeoff clearance and not start a takeoff roll unless I hear the words 'cleared for takeoff.'

Narrative: I WAS FLYING WITH A CFII, AND AM A CFI MYSELF. WE FILED AND RECEIVED AN IFR CLRNC FROM STOCKTON, CA, TO NAPA, CA. I READ BACK TO THE TWR, 'MAINTAIN RWY HDG, CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 29L' AND BEGAN THE TKOF ROLL. THE TWR DIDN'T RESPOND WITH A CORRECTION.
