Narrative:
During rollout after a normal touchdown at approximately 40 KIAS, the nosewheel shimmied. Pulling full nose up elevator did not stop the shimmy, so I applied the brakes and slowed to a speed at which the shimmy ceased. The takeoff and initial climb were normal. Upon attempting to retract the landing gear, the handle would not move to the full retract position. After several attempts to retract the gear, I decided to extend the gear and return for landing. The gear extended normally with a green light indicating extension. I had normal gear indications for down and locked. Touchdown on runway 16 was normal, but when the nosewheel touched down, the airplane veered to the left. I attempted to correct and there was a loud bang, followed by severe nosewheel shimmy that lasted only a few seconds. Limited rudder steering authority/authorized returned and I taxied to the ramp. Maintenance coordinator called me and we discussed the landing gear damage. In retrospect, I wish I would have asked the mechanic to inspect the shimmy problem after the first landing. A second, trained pair of eyes would have been reassuring and may have saved me from this occurrence, and further expense.

Title: M-20P PLT HAD SEVERE NOSEWHEEL SHIMMY ON LNDG. THE PLT THEN LEFT THE NEXT DAY WITHOUT TAKING MAINT ACTION TO FIX THE SHIMMY. THE ACFT SUSTAINED DAMAGE ON THE NEXT LNDG.
Narrative: DURING ROLLOUT AFTER A NORMAL TOUCHDOWN AT APPROX 40 KIAS, THE NOSEWHEEL SHIMMIED.
