Narrative:
After takeoff, EICAS leading edge slat disagreement. Flap indicator needle was between 'up' and '1.' followed irregular checklist. Communicated with dispatch and maintenance. Declared emergency and returned to ord uneventfully with a flap 20 degree landing (smooth) at 202000 pounds (4000 pounds over maximum landing weight). Rollout normal, returned to gate.
