Narrative:
Flight was cleared to taxi to runway 22L via taxiway Y. Prior to reaching the approach end of runway 22L, we were #2 behind a regional jet stopped on taxiway Y. Switching to the tower frequency, we advised ready in sequence for takeoff. Tower advised that the regional jet was not ready -- we would be #1. The tower instructed us to maneuver around to the right and proceed ahead of the regional jet. Directly to the right and ahead of our position was a paved area covered with a light snow coating. We confirmed with the tower that we were to taxi over that area. The tower confirmed that was correct, and we proceeded as instructed without incident. After departure and reaching final cruise altitude, I consulted the taxi chart once again. I found it questionable that a portion of the area the tower had us taxi on may or may not, have been considered a taxi area. Although I am certain, (other than we may have taxied on a portion of that ramp not considered for taxi) that there was no incident. In the future, taxi instructions that may sound or look suspicious, shall be questioned thoroughly to prevent a case of controller induced error.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR PIC WAS CONCERNED THAT HE MAY HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED BY THE TWR TO TAXI AROUND AN ACFT ON A RAMP SECTION AND NOT ON A TXWY.
Narrative: FLT WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 22L VIA TXWY Y. PRIOR TO REACHING THE APCH END OF RWY 22L, WE WERE #2 BEHIND A REGIONAL JET STOPPED ON TXWY Y. SWITCHING TO THE TWR FREQ, WE ADVISED READY IN SEQUENCE FOR TKOF. TWR ADVISED THAT THE REGIONAL JET WAS NOT READY -- WE WOULD BE #1. THE TWR INSTRUCTED US TO MANEUVER AROUND TO THE R AND PROCEED AHEAD OF THE REGIONAL JET. DIRECTLY TO THE R AND AHEAD OF OUR POS WAS A PAVED AREA COVERED WITH A LIGHT SNOW COATING. WE CONFIRMED WITH THE TWR THAT WE WERE TO TAXI OVER THAT AREA. THE TWR CONFIRMED THAT WAS CORRECT, AND WE PROCEEDED AS INSTRUCTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. AFTER DEP AND REACHING FINAL CRUISE ALT, I CONSULTED THE TAXI CHART ONCE AGAIN. I FOUND IT QUESTIONABLE THAT A PORTION OF THE AREA THE TWR HAD US TAXI ON MAY OR MAY NOT, HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED A TAXI AREA. ALTHOUGH I AM CERTAIN, (OTHER THAN WE MAY HAVE TAXIED ON A PORTION OF THAT RAMP NOT CONSIDERED FOR TAXI) THAT THERE WAS NO INCIDENT. IN THE FUTURE, TAXI INSTRUCTIONS THAT MAY SOUND OR LOOK SUSPICIOUS, SHALL BE QUESTIONED THOROUGHLY TO PREVENT A CASE OF CTLR INDUCED ERROR.
