Narrative:

On a localizer runway 4 approach to gvl, I mistook the distance on the GPS to be the mileage to the airport instead of the FAF. I began to descend when the mileage was less than the published 5. Zero NM from the FAF to the map. Fortunately, the ceiling was high enough to allow transition to visual at a safe altitude. Center issued a 'terrain alert' after I was in VMC. Although I will certainly never do this again, more training and study is needed on GPS operations.
