Narrative:
While on a practice VOR-a approach, we were instructed to circle east of the field and enter on a left base for runway 10. Busy as I was with a first flight instrument student, I remember hearing 'base for 10' and must have made up my mind we needed a right base. So I had my student look up in time to slow the plane and land. This was also my first instrument instruction flight, therefore, I was busy keeping an eye on our situation. As we were on very short final, tower called us and cleared us to land. 2 errors on my part -- won't happen again!
