Narrative:

Previous clearance was to descend 'pilot discretion' to 7000 ft. Current controller issued 'cleared to joplin airport.' I assumed we were cleared for visual approach. At 5000 ft, controller asked what altitude we were at, that we should have been at 7000 ft. In the future, I will verify altitude information with controller to insure exact instructions when cleared to airport.
