Narrative:
While taxiing out for takeoff, we were assigned 'spot 11.' at spot 11 we were told by ground control to taxi via taxiway H and 'taxiway east,' to hold short of runway 27R. We began to taxi while running our required checklists and noticed that we were crossing a runway. We then became confused of our location, because the 'signage' did not make sense. We then asked ground control for assistance, but he did not know our position. As it turned out, we had started taxiing on taxiway H, but had failed to make the turn onto taxiway east, and had inadvertently crossed runway 17-35, which was an active runway at the time. (This area is designated a 'hs' on the taxi chart.) once our situation was clarified, we proceeded to taxi to our assigned runway with new instructions from ground control. We were admonished by the controller to please exercise more caution in the future, as this was a 'critical area.' the flight continued without further incident.

Narrative: WHILE TAXIING OUT FOR TKOF, WE WERE ASSIGNED 'SPOT 11.' AT SPOT 11 WE WERE TOLD BY GND CTL TO TAXI VIA TXWY H AND 'TXWY E,' TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27R. WE BEGAN TO TAXI WHILE RUNNING OUR REQUIRED CHKLISTS AND NOTICED THAT WE WERE XING A RWY. WE THEN BECAME CONFUSED OF OUR LOCATION, BECAUSE THE 'SIGNAGE' DID NOT MAKE SENSE. WE THEN ASKED GND CTL FOR ASSISTANCE, BUT HE DID NOT KNOW OUR POS. AS IT TURNED OUT, WE HAD STARTED TAXIING ON TXWY H, BUT HAD FAILED TO MAKE THE TURN ONTO TXWY E, AND HAD INADVERTENTLY CROSSED RWY 17-35, WHICH WAS AN ACTIVE RWY AT THE TIME. (THIS AREA IS DESIGNATED A 'HS' ON THE TAXI CHART.) ONCE OUR SIT WAS CLARIFIED, WE PROCEEDED TO TAXI TO OUR ASSIGNED RWY WITH NEW INSTRUCTIONS FROM GND CTL. WE WERE ADMONISHED BY THE CTLR TO PLEASE EXERCISE MORE CAUTION IN THE FUTURE, AS THIS WAS A 'CRITICAL AREA.' THE FLT CONTINUED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
