Narrative:
Departed phx runway 7L behind air carrier Y airbus. He was on the buckeye, we were on the mobie 1 departure. No visual had been issued by tower to watch the air carrier Y airbus, but we were approximately 5 mi behind him on the climb out while eastbound before the 190 degrees turn at 4 DME. We turned as required by the SID and were issued a clearance to FL210 and turned to a heading of 190 degrees. Climbing through 10000 ft, I noticed the airbus moving left to right in front of us, as he was now wbound to bxk. I called departure to ask what he was doing there as we were headed towards him. About that time the TCASII/RA went off and we executed a left descending turn to avoid further contact. We advised ATC we were responding to a TCASII alert. The airbus pilots then asked ATC what the TCASII alert was about. The controller told them it was us, but that we had visual on them. The controller further asked if the tower had asked us to maintain visual on air carrier Y. We told him no. I contacted the ATC manager to discuss the incident. Supplemental information from acn 577418: I was flying (copilot) and the captain was watching the aircraft ahead of us. I can't make an assessment on what could be changed because I don't know what the clearance for the airbus was and the separation on the airbus was maintained visually at all times by us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 DEPARTED PHX BEHIND AN AIRBUS ON A SIMILAR DEP TRACK THAT REQUIRED EVASIVE ACTION BE TAKEN WHILE CLBING THROUGH 11000 FT.
Narrative: DEPARTED PHX RWY 7L BEHIND ACR Y AIRBUS. HE WAS ON THE BUCKEYE, WE WERE ON THE MOBIE 1 DEP. NO VISUAL HAD BEEN ISSUED BY TWR TO WATCH THE ACR Y AIRBUS, BUT WE WERE APPROX 5 MI BEHIND HIM ON THE CLBOUT WHILE EBOUND BEFORE THE 190 DEGS TURN AT 4 DME. WE TURNED AS REQUIRED BY THE SID AND WERE ISSUED A CLRNC TO FL210 AND TURNED TO A HEADING OF 190 DEGS. CLBING THROUGH 10000 FT, I NOTICED THE AIRBUS MOVING L TO R IN FRONT OF US, AS HE WAS NOW WBOUND TO BXK. I CALLED DEP TO ASK WHAT HE WAS DOING THERE AS WE WERE HEADED TOWARDS HIM. ABOUT THAT TIME THE TCASII/RA WENT OFF AND WE EXECUTED A L DSNDING TURN TO AVOID FURTHER CONTACT. WE ADVISED ATC WE WERE RESPONDING TO A TCASII ALERT. THE AIRBUS PLTS THEN ASKED ATC WHAT THE TCASII ALERT WAS ABOUT. THE CTLR TOLD THEM IT WAS US, BUT THAT WE HAD VISUAL ON THEM. THE CTLR FURTHER ASKED IF THE TWR HAD ASKED US TO MAINTAIN VISUAL ON ACR Y. WE TOLD HIM NO. I CONTACTED THE ATC MGR TO DISCUSS THE INCIDENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 577418: I WAS FLYING (COPLT) AND THE CAPT WAS WATCHING THE ACFT AHEAD OF US. I CAN'T MAKE AN ASSESSMENT ON WHAT COULD BE CHANGED BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE CLRNC FOR THE AIRBUS WAS AND THE SEPARATION ON THE AIRBUS WAS MAINTAINED VISUALLY AT ALL TIMES BY US.
