Narrative:

At the gate in ZZZ on our first flight of the day, one of the flight attendants told me the expiration date on the forward entry escape slide had expired. I called maintenance to come and check the escape slide. Maintenance wrote down the information from the forward entry escape slide, and checked that information about the slide on the computer system. The mechanic showed me a maintenance memo that stated: maintenance is tracking escape slide currency through the maintenance computer. The expiration date on the slide may be expired as long as the computer states the slide is current. This flight took a slight maintenance delay, because of the time it took to make sure our escape slide was current. I think the pilots and the flight attendants need to know about this maintenance escape slide currency.
