Narrative:
Departed runway 24 kteb, flying teb 5 departure. At 1500 ft, turned right to 280 degree heading. We did not understand that we were to remain at 1500 ft until 4.5 DME, then climb to 2000 ft. We made a slow climb to 2000 ft. Departure control advised us to, in the future, remain at 1500 ft, and resume the departure. On 2 of the runways for the TEB5 runways 01/31R after 2000 ft, instructions are to climb to 3000 ft. I set 3000 ft in the altitude preselect, and the first officer started to climb. Departure control told us to maintain 2000 ft, and at 2500 immediately return to 2000 ft. Lessons learned: read departure SID more closely. Brief SID with both pilots reading from SID. Hold configuring aircraft duties until reading 2000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GLF4 CREW HAD AN ALT OVERSHOT. DEPARTING TEB ON THE TEB5 DEP.
Narrative: DEPARTED RWY 24 KTEB, FLYING TEB 5 DEP. AT 1500 FT, TURNED R TO 280 DEG HDG. WE DID NOT UNDERSTAND THAT WE WERE TO REMAIN AT 1500 FT UNTIL 4.5 DME, THEN CLB TO 2000 FT. WE MADE A SLOW CLB TO 2000 FT. DEP CTL ADVISED US TO, IN THE FUTURE, REMAIN AT 1500 FT, AND RESUME THE DEP. ON 2 OF THE RWYS FOR THE TEB5 RWYS 01/31R AFTER 2000 FT, INSTRUCTIONS ARE TO CLB TO 3000 FT. I SET 3000 FT IN THE ALT PRESELECT, AND THE FO STARTED TO CLB. DEP CTL TOLD US TO MAINTAIN 2000 FT, AND AT 2500 IMMEDIATELY RETURN TO 2000 FT. LESSONS LEARNED: READ DEP SID MORE CLOSELY. BRIEF SID WITH BOTH PLTS READING FROM SID. HOLD CONFIGURING ACFT DUTIES UNTIL READING 2000 FT.
