Narrative:
Battery charger light illuminated during cruise. Accomplished QRH procedures. Discussed battery over-voltage with maintenance. Diverted to abq. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the battery charger warning light called our attention to the voltmeter which indicated an abnormally high battery voltage. The reporter's concern was that the nicad battery overheating could cause serious results. The reporter stated a diversion was made which resulted in an overweight landing, but no emergency was declared. The reporter said the maintenance action was the battery and battery charger were replaced. The reporter stated the battery charger circuit breaker did not trip and is not certain if it should have tripped.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 IN CRUISE AT FL240 DIVERTED DUE TO BATTERY CHARGER WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. BATTERY VOLTAGE ABNORMALLY HIGH.
Narrative: BATTERY CHARGER LIGHT ILLUMINATED DURING CRUISE. ACCOMPLISHED QRH PROCS. DISCUSSED BATTERY OVER-VOLTAGE WITH MAINT. DIVERTED TO ABQ. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE BATTERY CHARGER WARNING LIGHT CALLED OUR ATTN TO THE VOLTMETER WHICH INDICATED AN ABNORMALLY HIGH BATTERY VOLTAGE. THE RPTR'S CONCERN WAS THAT THE NICAD BATTERY OVERHEATING COULD CAUSE SERIOUS RESULTS. THE RPTR STATED A DIVERSION WAS MADE WHICH RESULTED IN AN OVERWT LNDG, BUT NO EMER WAS DECLARED. THE RPTR SAID THE MAINT ACTION WAS THE BATTERY AND BATTERY CHARGER WERE REPLACED. THE RPTR STATED THE BATTERY CHARGER CIRCUIT BREAKER DID NOT TRIP AND IS NOT CERTAIN IF IT SHOULD HAVE TRIPPED.
