Narrative:
During takeoff/climb out from oak, crew smelled arid smoke, immediately followed by 'main deck cargo fire' lights and bell. Accomplished emergency procedures, declared an emergency and turned back to oak. Lights went out on downwind. On final, loops a&B mid '2' came back on. On touchdown, loops a&B mid '1' and '2' came on. After landing, crew accomplished ground emergency evacuate/evacuation procedures. During evacuate/evacuation, 'right-1' slide did not inflate, automatically or manually. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the first officer stated the aircraft has had numerous false fire warnings from the main deck cargo compartment. Crash fire rescue equipment boarded the aircraft and was unable to find any sign of a fire in the main deck. The crew was limited to using the R-1 door slide because of 30 KT crosswind would have blown the R-2 door slide under the aircraft. Crash fire rescue equipment entered the aircraft via a ladder they placed at the door. The crew remained on the aircraft when it was towed to the gate.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A300 CREW SMELLED SMOKE, AND HAD A MAIN CARGO COMPARTMENT FIRE WARNING JUST AFTER TKOF AT OAK. DURING EVAC, THE R-1 SLIDE FAILED TO INFLATE EITHER AUTOMATICALLY OR MANUALLY.
Narrative: DURING TKOF/CLBOUT FROM OAK, CREW SMELLED ARID SMOKE, IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY 'MAIN DECK CARGO FIRE' LIGHTS AND BELL. ACCOMPLISHED EMER PROCS, DECLARED AN EMER AND TURNED BACK TO OAK. LIGHTS WENT OUT ON DOWNWIND. ON FINAL, LOOPS A&B MID '2' CAME BACK ON. ON TOUCHDOWN, LOOPS A&B MID '1' AND '2' CAME ON. AFTER LNDG, CREW ACCOMPLISHED GND EMER EVAC PROCS. DURING EVAC, 'R-1' SLIDE DID NOT INFLATE, AUTOMATICALLY OR MANUALLY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE FO STATED THE ACFT HAS HAD NUMEROUS FALSE FIRE WARNINGS FROM THE MAIN DECK CARGO COMPARTMENT. CFR BOARDED THE ACFT AND WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY SIGN OF A FIRE IN THE MAIN DECK. THE CREW WAS LIMITED TO USING THE R-1 DOOR SLIDE BECAUSE OF 30 KT XWIND WOULD HAVE BLOWN THE R-2 DOOR SLIDE UNDER THE ACFT. CFR ENTERED THE ACFT VIA A LADDER THEY PLACED AT THE DOOR. THE CREW REMAINED ON THE ACFT WHEN IT WAS TOWED TO THE GATE.
