Narrative:
I departed scottsdale airport VFR on an approximately heading of 330 degrees, direct drake, and contacted approach for flight following. I had briefed and planned the flight with reference to both company X charts and FAA VFR TCA charts for the area. Altitude preselect was set. I leveled at 6500 ft to remain below the phoenix class B airspace. After checking in with approach and being assigned a transponder code, the controller asked if I was familiar with the local airspace. I said yes, that I was level in order to remain below class B airspace for the next few mi. This was at approximately 18 DME from the phoenix VOR. The controller said that he believed the sector I was in was 6000 ft, and not 7000 ft, as I had planned. Upon rechking the charts, I found that he was correct and that I had simply misread the chart during planning. No conflict of any nature occurred. I simply need to take more care in reading the charts. In fact, in the future, I will not depart airspace with class B VFR and will file IFR instead.

AFTER CHKING IN WITH APCH AND BEING ASSIGNED A XPONDER CODE, THE CTLR ASKED IF I WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE LCL AIRSPACE. I SAID YES, THAT I WAS LEVEL IN ORDER TO REMAIN BELOW CLASS B AIRSPACE FOR THE NEXT FEW MI. THIS WAS AT APPROX 18 DME FROM THE PHOENIX VOR. THE CTLR SAID THAT HE BELIEVED THE SECTOR I WAS IN WAS 6000 FT, AND NOT 7000 FT, AS I HAD PLANNED.
