Narrative:
We were given clearance to taxi to runway 30L via runway 3. The first officer read the clearance back and we proceeded toward runway 30L. As we continued taxiing on runway 03 we did not notice any clear markings, or lighting identifying runway 30L. We proceeded on to taxi to runway 30L and into position and hold on runway 30L. At this point the tower advised us that we had not been cleared to position on runway 30L, and told us to remain at our current position. We obviously had misunderstood the controller on his clearance. I think that our misunderstanding was complicated furthermore by the fact that there are no clear appropriate markings or lighting in the area to help crew members avoid this situation. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter advised that from the point he entered 03/21 and turned left toward the 30L threshold there were no obvious hold lines. The reporter believes that if they were there they must have been obscured by rubber deposits from lndgs on runway 03.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF WW24 TAXIED ONTO RWY 30L AT SAT WITHOUT CLRNC. TAXI CLRNC INCLUDED USE OF INTERSECTING RWY AS TXWY.
Narrative: WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 30L VIA RWY 3. THE FO READ THE CLRNC BACK AND WE PROCEEDED TOWARD RWY 30L. AS WE CONTINUED TAXIING ON RWY 03 WE DID NOT NOTICE ANY CLR MARKINGS, OR LIGHTING IDENTIFYING RWY 30L. WE PROCEEDED ON TO TAXI TO RWY 30L AND INTO POSITION AND HOLD ON RWY 30L. AT THIS POINT THE TWR ADVISED US THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED TO POSITION ON RWY 30L, AND TOLD US TO REMAIN AT OUR CURRENT POSITION. WE OBVIOUSLY HAD MISUNDERSTOOD THE CTLR ON HIS CLRNC. I THINK THAT OUR MISUNDERSTANDING WAS COMPLICATED FURTHERMORE BY THE FACT THAT THERE ARE NO CLR APPROPRIATE MARKINGS OR LIGHTING IN THE AREA TO HELP CREW MEMBERS AVOID THIS SIT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR ADVISED THAT FROM THE POINT HE ENTERED 03/21 AND TURNED L TOWARD THE 30L THRESHOLD THERE WERE NO OBVIOUS HOLD LINES. THE RPTR BELIEVES THAT IF THEY WERE THERE THEY MUST HAVE BEEN OBSCURED BY RUBBER DEPOSITS FROM LNDGS ON RWY 03.
