Narrative:
Prior to taxi, looked over taxi chart and knew that we would have to taxi on the ramp to the runway at pvd. On pushback we were pushed to the exit/entry point midfield, called for taxi and told to taxi to runway 5R via taxiway T and we taxied onto runway 5L and then realized what we had done. Ground didn't seem to have a problem and no conflict was ever a problem. Just the way things are in pvd. Maybe a better way would be for ground to say taxi via taxiway T on the ramp. There are some airports where the airfield diagrams are not that well drawn and it could very easily be mistaken, even though I had reviewed the taxi chart prior. I should have been more questioning with ground.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TXWY INCURSION WHEN A B737 FLT CREW TAXIES ONTO TXWY V FOR A TXWY T RTE TO RWY 6 WITH PIC BELIEVING IT IS RWY 5L, WHICH DOES NOT EXIST AT PVD, RI.
Narrative: PRIOR TO TAXI, LOOKED OVER TAXI CHART AND KNEW THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO TAXI ON THE RAMP TO THE RWY AT PVD. ON PUSHBACK WE WERE PUSHED TO THE EXIT/ENTRY POINT MIDFIELD, CALLED FOR TAXI AND TOLD TO TAXI TO RWY 5R VIA TXWY T AND WE TAXIED ONTO RWY 5L AND THEN REALIZED WHAT WE HAD DONE. GND DIDN'T SEEM TO HAVE A PROB AND NO CONFLICT WAS EVER A PROB. JUST THE WAY THINGS ARE IN PVD. MAYBE A BETTER WAY WOULD BE FOR GND TO SAY TAXI VIA TXWY T ON THE RAMP. THERE ARE SOME ARPTS WHERE THE AIRFIELD DIAGRAMS ARE NOT THAT WELL DRAWN AND IT COULD VERY EASILY BE MISTAKEN, EVEN THOUGH I HAD REVIEWED THE TAXI CHART PRIOR. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE QUESTIONING WITH GND.
