Narrative:

After an engine change on a C172, and approximately 500 hour of operation, I removed the magneto to perform airworthiness directive 96-12-07, inspection of impulse coupling. I removed magneto, reread the airworthiness directive and, since this magneto was new from overhaul, and had a different type of flyweight retainers, I misinterpreted the directive. I signed off the airworthiness directive as no longer required. At a later date while reviewing the airworthiness directive again, I realized the mistake and assisted another mechanic in performing the directive. The impulse coupling was replaced as a precautionary measure.
