Narrative:

During climb out from stt in moderate to heavy rain showers and thunderstorms in area between stt and sju -- we experienced a very strong electrical burning odor passing approximately FL210. First officer accomplished cabin fire/smoke abnormal and odor cleared immediately. Flight attendants had reported same very strong odor and passenger were very concerned until odor dissipated. Also occurring at this time was a difficulty obtaining well defined radar returns due to heavy attenuating returns. Contacted dispatch and decided to divert to sdq account of sju cumulonimbus and questions about our radar. Landed sdq without incident.

Title: A B757 FLT CREW EXPERIENCES ELECTRICAL BURNING ODOR AND HAD RADAR PROBS WITH TSTM ACTIVITY IN AREA. THEY RUN THE CHKLIST AND DECIDE TO DIVERT AND LAND.

FO ACCOMPLISHED CABIN FIRE/SMOKE ABNORMAL AND ODOR CLRED IMMEDIATELY. FLT ATTENDANTS HAD RPTED SAME VERY STRONG ODOR AND PAX WERE VERY CONCERNED UNTIL ODOR DISSIPATED. ALSO OCCURRING AT THIS TIME WAS A DIFFICULTY OBTAINING WELL DEFINED RADAR RETURNS DUE TO HVY ATTENUATING RETURNS. CONTACTED DISPATCH AND DECIDED TO DIVERT TO SDQ ACCOUNT OF SJU CUMULONIMBUS AND QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR RADAR. LANDED SDQ WITHOUT INCIDENT.
