Narrative:
While preparing to depart from hilton head, sc, in a DHC8, I misread the performance data chart. Since the runway at hilton head is only 4300 ft long, we were weight limited. I glanced at the performance data and saw '399' or so I thought. It was really '3939' which would have given us a maximum takeoff weight of 39390 pounds. Thinking that I saw '399,' I listed our takeoff weight as 39,900 pounds. I should have realized the mistake when we departed with 10 more bags and 2 more souls than the performance listed. I was trying to get everyone on, that our weight would allow. With my attention devoted on my calculations, I failed to realize my souls onboard and bag count were over. We departed without incident and in-flight I realized the mistake. In the future more time and attention should be devoted to xchking the performance numbers.
