Narrative:
After receiving my IFR clearance, I was cleared to taxi to runway 30L, the active runway. My right seat passenger, a 200 hour, instrument rated pilot, was reviewing the SID given to us in our clearance. As he was going over the departure procedures, questions were asked about the initial fixes. I then started to look over the procedure myself while he held the plates. While reviewing the SID, I began instructing him on how to set up the GPS for our departure. While this was taking place I inadvertently turned left onto runway 30R (runway 12L) thinking it was the taxiway and did not realize my mistake until we were approximately halfway down the 3800 ft runway. Ground control never questioned or commented on my actions. I continued the taxi to the end and turned on the appropriate taxiway and finished my taxi to runway 30L. The diversion of my attention from the taxi as well as my unfamiliarity with the airport caused this mistake.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C414 PLT IS DISTRACTED SHOWING A PAX THE GPS WHILE TAXIING WHICH RESULTED IN THE PLT TAXIING DOWN A RWY WITHOUT A CLRNC.
Narrative: AFTER RECEIVING MY IFR CLRNC, I WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 30L, THE ACTIVE RWY. MY R SEAT PAX, A 200 HR, INST RATED PLT, WAS REVIEWING THE SID GIVEN TO US IN OUR CLRNC. AS HE WAS GOING OVER THE DEP PROCS, QUESTIONS WERE ASKED ABOUT THE INITIAL FIXES. I THEN STARTED TO LOOK OVER THE PROC MYSELF WHILE HE HELD THE PLATES. WHILE REVIEWING THE SID, I BEGAN INSTRUCTING HIM ON HOW TO SET UP THE GPS FOR OUR DEP. WHILE THIS WAS TAKING PLACE I INADVERTENTLY TURNED L ONTO RWY 30R (RWY 12L) THINKING IT WAS THE TXWY AND DID NOT REALIZE MY MISTAKE UNTIL WE WERE APPROX HALFWAY DOWN THE 3800 FT RWY. GND CTL NEVER QUESTIONED OR COMMENTED ON MY ACTIONS. I CONTINUED THE TAXI TO THE END AND TURNED ON THE APPROPRIATE TXWY AND FINISHED MY TAXI TO RWY 30L. THE DIVERSION OF MY ATTN FROM THE TAXI AS WELL AS MY UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE ARPT CAUSED THIS MISTAKE.
