Narrative:

Cleared for takeoff from rap tower. Handed off to ZDV. I asked center to verify we were cleared on course J-85. He asked what was our clearance. I told him we were still on the runway heading and wanted to verify cleared on course. The controller said, 'what you did was a dangerous thing' and said cleared on course. J-85 comes off rap VOR. We had not yet reached the VOR. In my opinion we were not 'off course' since we had not reached the NAVAID. Since the tower was open, I expected either 'fly runway heading' cleared for takeoff or 'turn on course' cleared for takeoff. Had the tower been closed I would have turned on course.

Title: DC9 DEPARTING RAP RWY 14 ON RWY HEADING CHASTISED BY ZDV CTLR FOR FLYING A '...DANGEROUS...' FLT PATH. FLTCREW CONTENDS TWR FAILED TO GIVE THEM APPROPRIATE FLT PATH GUIDANCE WITH TKOF CLRNC.

Narrative: CLRED FOR TKOF FROM RAP TWR. HANDED OFF TO ZDV. I ASKED CTR TO VERIFY WE WERE CLRED ON COURSE J-85. HE ASKED WHAT WAS OUR CLRNC. I TOLD HIM WE WERE STILL ON THE RWY HEADING AND WANTED TO VERIFY CLRED ON COURSE. THE CTLR SAID, 'WHAT YOU DID WAS A DANGEROUS THING' AND SAID CLRED ON COURSE. J-85 COMES OFF RAP VOR. WE HAD NOT YET REACHED THE VOR. IN MY OPINION WE WERE NOT 'OFF COURSE' SINCE WE HAD NOT REACHED THE NAVAID. SINCE THE TWR WAS OPEN, I EXPECTED EITHER 'FLY RWY HEADING' CLRED FOR TKOF OR 'TURN ON COURSE' CLRED FOR TKOF. HAD THE TWR BEEN CLOSED I WOULD HAVE TURNED ON COURSE.
