Narrative:
Departed runway 12R at msp, gear up/flaps up power was set to quiet EPR 1.54. Few moments later heard a loud bang/pop from one of the engines, followed by a strong odor. All engine indications normal. Flight attendants called up front and said they heard a loud bang come from the right side, the right engine. The first officer was flying and I requested to return back to the airport for a landing. We enter downwind to runway 12R. All engine indications were normal and the smell in the flight deck was dissipating. Called dispatch and advise them of the situation and that we were returning for a landing at msp. Advised flight attendants and passenger we were returning back to msp. Msp tower called out the equipment, we made a normal landing. We got a new aircraft and departed for cid. After arriving at cid, called maintenance control and was told the right engine took a bird strike.
