Narrative:
On takeoff from lax runway 24L, the tower advised us of traffic on takeoff leg from the south complex. We acknowledged the traffic visual contact and the tower immediately turned us into him on vector of 210 degrees and directly behind him about 2 mi on TCAS. We were unable to keep visual with the nose up on departure so I had the first officer turn so as to keep the traffic in sight. We went to departure and leveled at 3000 ft. I told departure that the tower had crossed us directly behind and in the path of the other traffic and didn't think it was a good idea. He said he would tell tower. As we continued, I switched to the #2 radio and lax tower and told them my concerns. We continued without incident. My major concern was losing sight of the traffic we had acknowledged at a close 2 mi range at very low altitude. I was also concerned about passing through the jetwash of an airbus at approximately 2 mi, slow greater than 200 KIAS, and less than 2000 ft. There appeared to be no reason for turning us so soon and right behind another aircraft. If this is done as a routine matter, it should be stopped. I did not follow the tower's instruction and maneuvered so as not to fly directly behind and through the jetwash.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B733 DEPARTING LAX IS FRUSTRATED WITH ATC'S VISUAL SEPARATION APPLICATION.
Narrative: ON TKOF FROM LAX RWY 24L, THE TWR ADVISED US OF TFC ON TKOF LEG FROM THE S COMPLEX. WE ACKNOWLEDGED THE TFC VISUAL CONTACT AND THE TWR IMMEDIATELY TURNED US INTO HIM ON VECTOR OF 210 DEGS AND DIRECTLY BEHIND HIM ABOUT 2 MI ON TCAS. WE WERE UNABLE TO KEEP VISUAL WITH THE NOSE UP ON DEP SO I HAD THE FO TURN SO AS TO KEEP THE TFC IN SIGHT. WE WENT TO DEP AND LEVELED AT 3000 FT. I TOLD DEP THAT THE TWR HAD CROSSED US DIRECTLY BEHIND AND IN THE PATH OF THE OTHER TFC AND DIDN'T THINK IT WAS A GOOD IDEA. HE SAID HE WOULD TELL TWR. AS WE CONTINUED, I SWITCHED TO THE #2 RADIO AND LAX TWR AND TOLD THEM MY CONCERNS. WE CONTINUED WITHOUT INCIDENT. MY MAJOR CONCERN WAS LOSING SIGHT OF THE TFC WE HAD ACKNOWLEDGED AT A CLOSE 2 MI RANGE AT VERY LOW ALT. I WAS ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT PASSING THROUGH THE JETWASH OF AN AIRBUS AT APPROX 2 MI, SLOW GREATER THAN 200 KIAS, AND LESS THAN 2000 FT. THERE APPEARED TO BE NO REASON FOR TURNING US SO SOON AND RIGHT BEHIND ANOTHER ACFT. IF THIS IS DONE AS A ROUTINE MATTER, IT SHOULD BE STOPPED. I DID NOT FOLLOW THE TWR'S INSTRUCTION AND MANEUVERED SO AS NOT TO FLY DIRECTLY BEHIND AND THROUGH THE JETWASH.
