Narrative:

We had just completed a pacific crossing and arriving into oak on vectors for the visual to runway 27R. We were turning into a setting sun with haze in the area. We were given a 2000 ft restr until 6 DME from oak. We got one last vector and we rolled out right in front of an airport about 6-7 NM away that we thought was oak. We were at 5000 ft and the DME was 11 mi from oak. The ILS was tuned and an extended centerline for runway 27R. Our restr did not make sense to what we saw visually. We thought the controller left us high and tight for the runway. The localizer was fully deflected to the north and the GS fully deflected down. This made sense with what we thought was a tight and high turn onto final. We discussed the restr and tried to clear the discrepancy. We were now closing in on the airport inside a 4 mi final and high. I asked the PNF if I could descend via the restr. He advised and I agreed we were high and needed to get down. I now concentrated on getting established on the VASI and configured. The level of automation was dropped to the lowest (visual). We ignored all other information and continued without clearing up the confusion on the DME. The PNF forgot to switch to the tower. At approximately 1000 ft and 4 mi, the controller came on and told us to execute a go around, climb to 1500 ft and a heading of 320 degrees. He said we were on final to runway 28R at hayward, ca. I executed a go around and we landed at oak without further incident. Notes: we had just completed a pacific crossing, on the back side of the clock, flying over 12 hours within 24 hours. Both airports have the same confign, that being parallel runways to the west and the left runway longer than the right. Both airports are within 6 mi of each other. Oak runway 27L is 6212 ft and runway 27R is 5453 ft. Hwd runway 28L is 5024 ft and runway 28R is 3107 ft. We talked with the ground controller at oak and apologized and he said it happens a lot. We learned a lot that day. Back up everything, even on what looks like the runway...fatigue was against us.

Title: F2TH CREW ON VECTOR FOR VISUAL APCH TO OAK MISTAKE HWD FOR OAK ARPT.

Narrative: WE HAD JUST COMPLETED A PACIFIC XING AND ARRIVING INTO OAK ON VECTORS FOR THE VISUAL TO RWY 27R. WE WERE TURNING INTO A SETTING SUN WITH HAZE IN THE AREA. WE WERE GIVEN A 2000 FT RESTR UNTIL 6 DME FROM OAK. WE GOT ONE LAST VECTOR AND WE ROLLED OUT RIGHT IN FRONT OF AN ARPT ABOUT 6-7 NM AWAY THAT WE THOUGHT WAS OAK. WE WERE AT 5000 FT AND THE DME WAS 11 MI FROM OAK. THE ILS WAS TUNED AND AN EXTENDED CTRLINE FOR RWY 27R. OUR RESTR DID NOT MAKE SENSE TO WHAT WE SAW VISUALLY. WE THOUGHT THE CTLR LEFT US HIGH AND TIGHT FOR THE RWY. THE LOC WAS FULLY DEFLECTED TO THE N AND THE GS FULLY DEFLECTED DOWN. THIS MADE SENSE WITH WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS A TIGHT AND HIGH TURN ONTO FINAL. WE DISCUSSED THE RESTR AND TRIED TO CLR THE DISCREPANCY. WE WERE NOW CLOSING IN ON THE ARPT INSIDE A 4 MI FINAL AND HIGH. I ASKED THE PNF IF I COULD DSND VIA THE RESTR. HE ADVISED AND I AGREED WE WERE HIGH AND NEEDED TO GET DOWN. I NOW CONCENTRATED ON GETTING ESTABLISHED ON THE VASI AND CONFIGURED. THE LEVEL OF AUTOMATION WAS DROPPED TO THE LOWEST (VISUAL). WE IGNORED ALL OTHER INFO AND CONTINUED WITHOUT CLRING UP THE CONFUSION ON THE DME. THE PNF FORGOT TO SWITCH TO THE TWR. AT APPROX 1000 FT AND 4 MI, THE CTLR CAME ON AND TOLD US TO EXECUTE A GAR, CLB TO 1500 FT AND A HEADING OF 320 DEGS. HE SAID WE WERE ON FINAL TO RWY 28R AT HAYWARD, CA. I EXECUTED A GAR AND WE LANDED AT OAK WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. NOTES: WE HAD JUST COMPLETED A PACIFIC XING, ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE CLOCK, FLYING OVER 12 HRS WITHIN 24 HRS. BOTH ARPTS HAVE THE SAME CONFIGN, THAT BEING PARALLEL RWYS TO THE W AND THE L RWY LONGER THAN THE R. BOTH ARPTS ARE WITHIN 6 MI OF EACH OTHER. OAK RWY 27L IS 6212 FT AND RWY 27R IS 5453 FT. HWD RWY 28L IS 5024 FT AND RWY 28R IS 3107 FT. WE TALKED WITH THE GND CTLR AT OAK AND APOLOGIZED AND HE SAID IT HAPPENS A LOT. WE LEARNED A LOT THAT DAY. BACK UP EVERYTHING, EVEN ON WHAT LOOKS LIKE THE RWY...FATIGUE WAS AGAINST US.
