Narrative:

At departure time and doors just closed. Tug driver called to release brakes. Captain released brakes and told first officer to get pushback clearance. Just then, tug driver called to say ramp had more bags to load. Captain acknowledged call and told first officer to cancel pushback with ground. A few mins later, tug driver came back on and asked what had changed. Captain responded 'nothing, why?' tug driver said aircraft had rolled back about 5 ft after he left tug. He asked if brakes were set. Captain said they were off and had been off since initial call for release. Tug driver then said he had asked for brakes to be reset when additional bags were to be loaded, but hadn't waited for acknowledgement. No one was injured, no equipment was damaged, but it was a case where there was a lack of communications. Tug driver had assumed brakes were set (even though no acknowledgement or light on) and captain assumed tug driver still had control of aircraft.
