Narrative:
We copied our ATC clearance and were told to hold for release. Ogg tower was about to close and we were to call ZHN for our release. We used the CTAF frequency to check for other traffic and talked to an inbound business jet just outside the marker. We went ahead and took off in pure VFR WX, having just plain forgot to call ZHN. We called them immediately after airborne and just then realized what we had done. The controller didn't seem too excited, but did remind us that we should have called for our release. Their only traffic was the inbound that we had talked to. In effect, we ended up departing VFR in VFR WX and picked up our clearance in the air. No particular human factors except that we felt stupid.
