Narrative:
We were cleared into position and hold on runway 31 in nashville. We waited on the runway for 1-2 mins and I asked the first officer 'what are we waiting for?' he said he thought it might be a small aircraft touch and go to runway 2C. I heard someone ask for a wind check and I thought to myself that another carrier is the only one who asks for wind checks. When I couldn't see any landing lights on final for runways 1C or 2L, I keyed the microphone and asked tower 'what was the plan' or words to that effect. The tower controller immediately said 'oh gosh, carrier number, go around!' a few seconds later the MD80 passed directly over us. The controller thanked us for the heads up. My taxi light and outboard landing lights were on. The intermittent function of the landing light system was inoperative.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 31 IN NASHVILLE. WE WAITED ON THE RWY FOR 1-2 MINS AND I ASKED THE FO 'WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?' HE SAID HE THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE A SMALL ACFT TOUCH AND GO TO RWY 2C. I HEARD SOMEONE ASK FOR A WIND CHK AND I THOUGHT TO MYSELF THAT ANOTHER CARRIER IS THE ONLY ONE WHO ASKS FOR WIND CHKS. WHEN I COULDN'T SEE ANY LNDG LIGHTS ON FINAL FOR RWYS 1C OR 2L, I KEYED THE MIKE AND ASKED TWR 'WHAT WAS THE PLAN' OR WORDS TO THAT EFFECT. THE TWR CTLR IMMEDIATELY SAID 'OH GOSH, CARRIER NUMBER, GO AROUND!' A FEW SECONDS LATER THE MD80 PASSED DIRECTLY OVER US. THE CTLR THANKED US FOR THE HEADS UP. MY TAXI LIGHT AND OUTBOARD LNDG LIGHTS WERE ON. THE INTERMITTENT FUNCTION OF THE LNDG LIGHT SYS WAS INOP.
