Narrative:
After completing our run-up, we taxied to the hold short line of runway 16. My student was at the controls in the left seat. He called the tower saying 'skyhawk holding short runway 16, ready for takeoff.' the tower replied with 'skyhawk, taxi up and hold.' I thought the tower meant taxi into position and hold. I wanted to verify what the tower had meant, when I heard him say to an inbound plane 'you are cleared to land, there will be a departure prior to your arrival.' this led me to believe that tower wanted us to be ready to go, and we crossed the hold short line. Tower then told us to stop and clear the runway. We complied immediately, but the inbound plane elected to go around. Factors contributing to this incident were the use of non-standard phraseology by the tower, and my failure to verify whether he meant 'hold short' or 'taxi into position and hold.' to avoid this type of situation in the future, I will always ask if I am not sure of a clearance -- especially before entering the active runway.

Title: COM MISUNDERSTANDING RESULTS IN RWY INCURSION AT HPN.
Narrative: AFTER COMPLETING OUR RUN-UP, WE TAXIED TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF RWY 16. MY STUDENT WAS AT THE CTLS IN THE L SEAT. HE CALLED THE TWR SAYING 'SKYHAWK HOLDING SHORT RWY 16, READY FOR TKOF.' THE TWR REPLIED WITH 'SKYHAWK, TAXI UP AND HOLD.' I THOUGHT THE TWR MEANT TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD. I WANTED TO VERIFY WHAT THE TWR HAD MEANT, WHEN I HEARD HIM SAY TO AN INBOUND PLANE 'YOU ARE CLRED TO LAND, THERE WILL BE A DEP PRIOR TO YOUR ARR.' THIS LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT TWR WANTED US TO BE READY TO GO, AND WE CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. TWR THEN TOLD US TO STOP AND CLR THE RWY. WE COMPLIED IMMEDIATELY, BUT THE INBOUND PLANE ELECTED TO GO AROUND. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THIS INCIDENT WERE THE USE OF NON-STANDARD PHRASEOLOGY BY THE TWR, AND MY FAILURE TO VERIFY WHETHER HE MEANT 'HOLD SHORT' OR 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD.' TO AVOID THIS TYPE OF SIT IN THE FUTURE, I WILL ALWAYS ASK IF I AM NOT SURE OF A CLRNC -- ESPECIALLY BEFORE ENTERING THE ACTIVE RWY.
