Narrative:
My student called at 10 NM inbound for landing. Told to report right base runway 36. At 5 NM, air tractor reported 5 NM southeast. Tower confirmed where we were. We were well behind him. She said we were $#2 following air tractor. After air tractor landed, we reported 3 mi right base. There was another C152 on left downwind so tower had us do a left 360 degree turn for spacing. 1/2 way around the 360 degree turn, she asked us to report back on base, which we did. Immediately after we reported on base, she asked if we saw the other aircraft on base. I said no, and told her that we were going to turn away from the airport to avoid traffic. Just as we turned left to the south away from the airport, the C152 was turning final and we were head-on. I grabbed the controls from my student and banked sharply to the left avoiding the traffic. I radioed tower to report the situation and we landed. I called tower on the phone after getting out of the plane. She summed it up by saying she couldn't see us. I asked why we were both put on opposite bases when she couldn't see us. A line worker saw the whole thing clearly as the WX was clear. Everybody at the FBO had a story of their own about something silly the same controller had done to them.

Title: A C150 PLT HAS AN NMAC WITH A C152 WHILE BEING CTLED BY TUP TWR.
Narrative: MY STUDENT CALLED AT 10 NM INBOUND FOR LNDG. TOLD TO RPT R BASE RWY 36. AT 5 NM, AIR TRACTOR RPTED 5 NM SE. TWR CONFIRMED WHERE WE WERE. WE WERE WELL BEHIND HIM. SHE SAID WE WERE $#2 FOLLOWING AIR TRACTOR. AFTER AIR TRACTOR LANDED, WE RPTED 3 MI R BASE. THERE WAS ANOTHER C152 ON L DOWNWIND SO TWR HAD US DO A L 360 DEG TURN FOR SPACING. 1/2 WAY AROUND THE 360 DEG TURN, SHE ASKED US TO RPT BACK ON BASE, WHICH WE DID. IMMEDIATELY AFTER WE RPTED ON BASE, SHE ASKED IF WE SAW THE OTHER ACFT ON BASE. I SAID NO, AND TOLD HER THAT WE WERE GOING TO TURN AWAY FROM THE ARPT TO AVOID TFC. JUST AS WE TURNED L TO THE S AWAY FROM THE ARPT, THE C152 WAS TURNING FINAL AND WE WERE HEAD-ON. I GRABBED THE CTLS FROM MY STUDENT AND BANKED SHARPLY TO THE L AVOIDING THE TFC. I RADIOED TWR TO RPT THE SIT AND WE LANDED. I CALLED TWR ON THE PHONE AFTER GETTING OUT OF THE PLANE. SHE SUMMED IT UP BY SAYING SHE COULDN'T SEE US. I ASKED WHY WE WERE BOTH PUT ON OPPOSITE BASES WHEN SHE COULDN'T SEE US. A LINE WORKER SAW THE WHOLE THING CLRLY AS THE WX WAS CLR. EVERYBODY AT THE FBO HAD A STORY OF THEIR OWN ABOUT SOMETHING SILLY THE SAME CTLR HAD DONE TO THEM.
