Narrative:
After a non-event takeoff, the flight attendant called during climb and reported a peculiar odor in the cabin. A short time later she called and said it was hot. I told her it was as cool as I could get it. She told me that the passenger were having a hard time breathing in the cabin. I told ATC we need to return to lax for landing. Then the flight attendant called again and reported smoke in the cabin. An emergency was declared. Within a few seconds of this communication, the flight attendant called and said the smoke was gone. After landing on runway 24R at lax an emergency evacuate/evacuation was performed. After the evacuate/evacuation, the appropriate maintenance entry was made. Supplemental information from acn 584638: we landed runway 24R. Crash fire rescue equipment inspected aircraft prior to and after evacuate/evacuation.
