Narrative:
Landed abq runway 3, turned off taxiway C, contacted ground and was cleared to hold short of runway 8. Read back clearance. Did flaps up, clean up checklist. Reported off to call operations to verify gate. Did not hear company after first call. Turned #2 volume up and called again and verified gate. As we slowed to hold short of runway 8, I came back on #1 volume and believed I heard a clearance for us to proceed without delay and cross runway 8. I read back the clearance and we cleared left and right and crossed runway 8. The only aircraft in sight on final looked to be a safe distance out. As we cleared the runway, ground told us we were supposed to hold short of runway 8. I told them we read back a clearance to cross without delay. Ground control told us the crossing was for a ground vehicle. Factors: I was monitoring both company and ground with the volume on company up. I may have heard the company use our call sign as the clearance was given and mistook it for our clearance. I did read back the clearance and was not corrected by ground. There was plenty of room to stop had ground responded to my readback. We were the only aircraft holding short of runway 8. Corrective action: be careful with volume control. Listen closer to #1 volume and maybe miss a call or two on company supplemental information from acn 584869: tower sent the aircraft on final around.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737 FLT CREW MISTOOK A COMPANY CALL FOR GND CTL AND CROSSED THE RWY WITHOUT A CLRNC, RESULTING IN AN ACFT GOING AROUND.
Narrative: LANDED ABQ RWY 3, TURNED OFF TXWY C, CONTACTED GND AND WAS CLRED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 8. READ BACK CLRNC. DID FLAPS UP, CLEAN UP CHKLIST. RPTED OFF TO CALL OPS TO VERIFY GATE. DID NOT HEAR COMPANY AFTER FIRST CALL. TURNED #2 VOLUME UP AND CALLED AGAIN AND VERIFIED GATE. AS WE SLOWED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 8, I CAME BACK ON #1 VOLUME AND BELIEVED I HEARD A CLRNC FOR US TO PROCEED WITHOUT DELAY AND CROSS RWY 8. I READ BACK THE CLRNC AND WE CLRED L AND R AND CROSSED RWY 8. THE ONLY ACFT IN SIGHT ON FINAL LOOKED TO BE A SAFE DISTANCE OUT. AS WE CLRED THE RWY, GND TOLD US WE WERE SUPPOSED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 8. I TOLD THEM WE READ BACK A CLRNC TO CROSS WITHOUT DELAY. GND CTL TOLD US THE XING WAS FOR A GND VEHICLE. FACTORS: I WAS MONITORING BOTH COMPANY AND GND WITH THE VOLUME ON COMPANY UP. I MAY HAVE HEARD THE COMPANY USE OUR CALL SIGN AS THE CLRNC WAS GIVEN AND MISTOOK IT FOR OUR CLRNC. I DID READ BACK THE CLRNC AND WAS NOT CORRECTED BY GND. THERE WAS PLENTY OF ROOM TO STOP HAD GND RESPONDED TO MY READBACK. WE WERE THE ONLY ACFT HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 8. CORRECTIVE ACTION: BE CAREFUL WITH VOLUME CTL. LISTEN CLOSER TO #1 VOLUME AND MAYBE MISS A CALL OR TWO ON COMPANY SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 584869: TWR SENT THE ACFT ON FINAL AROUND.
