Narrative:

Flying with a fill-in, part time copilot, who was not greatly experienced in the aircraft. The canoga 6 departure off runway 16 at van nuys calls for climb limit of 1750 ft MSL till reaching the 2.2 DME. The FMS was programmed for this and after takeoff, we usually hit LNAV and VNAV. As we took the runway, I realized that my copilot was beginning to struggle with simple tasks as the stress level rose -- exemplified by his stumbling with the radio call to take the runway. We were cleared for takeoff and I quickly decided to review all that he had done. My workload increased dramatically at a very critical point. Considering that, shortly after takeoff, I do not know if I hit or he hit the flch (flight level change button) rather than the VNAV button, which led to busting through the 1750 ft and I did not get it stopped till 2100 ft leaving burbank arrs, runway 8, unprotected. No conflict with other aircraft arose. Things I learned: do not take the runway until absolutely sure all is well and monitor, monitor, monitor.

Narrative: FLYING WITH A FILL-IN, PART TIME COPLT, WHO WAS NOT GREATLY EXPERIENCED IN THE ACFT. THE CANOGA 6 DEP OFF RWY 16 AT VAN NUYS CALLS FOR CLB LIMIT OF 1750 FT MSL TILL REACHING THE 2.2 DME. THE FMS WAS PROGRAMMED FOR THIS AND AFTER TKOF, WE USUALLY HIT LNAV AND VNAV. AS WE TOOK THE RWY, I REALIZED THAT MY COPLT WAS BEGINNING TO STRUGGLE WITH SIMPLE TASKS AS THE STRESS LEVEL ROSE -- EXEMPLIFIED BY HIS STUMBLING WITH THE RADIO CALL TO TAKE THE RWY. WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF AND I QUICKLY DECIDED TO REVIEW ALL THAT HE HAD DONE. MY WORKLOAD INCREASED DRAMATICALLY AT A VERY CRITICAL POINT. CONSIDERING THAT, SHORTLY AFTER TKOF, I DO NOT KNOW IF I HIT OR HE HIT THE FLCH (FLT LEVEL CHANGE BUTTON) RATHER THAN THE VNAV BUTTON, WHICH LED TO BUSTING THROUGH THE 1750 FT AND I DID NOT GET IT STOPPED TILL 2100 FT LEAVING BURBANK ARRS, RWY 8, UNPROTECTED. NO CONFLICT WITH OTHER ACFT AROSE. THINGS I LEARNED: DO NOT TAKE THE RWY UNTIL ABSOLUTELY SURE ALL IS WELL AND MONITOR, MONITOR, MONITOR.
