Narrative:
50 mins out of dfw the cockpit called to say there was smoke in the cockpit and we were returning to dfw. We made an abrupt turn to avoid going around some thunderstorms. Passenger got sick, to stop smoke, something was turned off which made the cabin warmer and stuffier which added to more passenger feeling and getting sick. We landed in iah. Cockpit crew was too busy to communicate more than that to us. This is when I think a 3RD pilot would have been helpful, as passenger and cabin crew really did not know what was going on until right before landing. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter indicated the captain's audio selector panel had failed and was smoking. When emergency procedures cut electrical power, the smoke stopped. Crash fire rescue equipment inspected the aircraft and the forward pit area to insure no further problems existed. Maintenance replaced the captain's audio selector panel with the second observer's panel and deferred the second observer's panel. The aircraft continued on to destination without further problem.

Title: B757-200 CREW HAD SMOKE AND FUMES IN THE COCKPIT IN ZHU CLASS A.
Narrative: 50 MINS OUT OF DFW THE COCKPIT CALLED TO SAY THERE WAS SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT AND WE WERE RETURNING TO DFW. WE MADE AN ABRUPT TURN TO AVOID GOING AROUND SOME TSTMS. PAX GOT SICK, TO STOP SMOKE, SOMETHING WAS TURNED OFF WHICH MADE THE CABIN WARMER AND STUFFIER WHICH ADDED TO MORE PAX FEELING AND GETTING SICK. WE LANDED IN IAH. COCKPIT CREW WAS TOO BUSY TO COMMUNICATE MORE THAN THAT TO US. THIS IS WHEN I THINK A 3RD PLT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL, AS PAX AND CABIN CREW REALLY DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON UNTIL RIGHT BEFORE LNDG. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR INDICATED THE CAPT'S AUDIO SELECTOR PANEL HAD FAILED AND WAS SMOKING. WHEN EMER PROCS CUT ELECTRICAL PWR, THE SMOKE STOPPED. CFR INSPECTED THE ACFT AND THE FORWARD PIT AREA TO INSURE NO FURTHER PROBS EXISTED.
