Narrative:

We were cleared for a visual approach to runway 24L in cle. About 5 mi out, we were told to switch to tower and were cleared to land on runway 24R. After landing on runway 24R, tower instructed us to clear the runway, turn left on taxiway G, right on taxiway south, and hold short of runway 24L (runway 24C was closed). As I turned onto taxiway south, I verbalized to my first officer, 'cross runway 24C, hold short runway 24L.' as we were crossing runway 24C, I remarked that the taxiway was very poorly marked. On the south side of runway 24C, taxiway south widens considerably. I continued across runway 24C, crossed what I believed was the hold short bar for runway 24C, and stopped well short of what I believed was the hold short for runway 24L. I have always been in the habit of not taxiing all the way up to a hold short bar if possible. An rj had been cleared for takeoff on runway 24L. When that aircraft passed us, tower cleared us across runway 24L and told us to contact ground. As I proceeded to cross runway 24L, I noticed that the second hold short bar was actually for aircraft holding short of runway 24C taxiing the other direction. At that point, I realized I had crossed the hold short for runway 24L. We contacted ground control and proceeded to the gate normally. Neither tower or ground control mentioned anything to us, and I believe that they didn't even notice that we had crossed the hold short bar. I would estimate that I crossed the hold short for runway 24L by 5-8 ft. After we were parked, I double-checked the cle ground charts. I was well aware of the proximity of runways 24L and 24C and the runway incursion 'hot spot X' for taxiway south. What I failed to realize is that when taxiing sbound, the hold short for runway 24L is the first hold short bar you get to. I had mistaken that bar for the hold short for runway 24C. Intuitively, you would think that when exiting a runway, the first hold short bar you cross would be for that runway. This is not the case in cle. If I had paid closer attention to the actually painted markings, I would have noticed. The hold short lines are depicted on the 10-9 page, but there is nothing depicting which line is which. The only place it shows that information is in the inset.

Title: B737 TAXIING TO THE GATE AT CLE CROSSED HOLD LINE FOR RWY 24L.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 24L IN CLE. ABOUT 5 MI OUT, WE WERE TOLD TO SWITCH TO TWR AND WERE CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 24R. AFTER LNDG ON RWY 24R, TWR INSTRUCTED US TO CLR THE RWY, TURN L ON TXWY G, R ON TXWY S, AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 24L (RWY 24C WAS CLOSED). AS I TURNED ONTO TXWY S, I VERBALIZED TO MY FO, 'CROSS RWY 24C, HOLD SHORT RWY 24L.' AS WE WERE XING RWY 24C, I REMARKED THAT THE TXWY WAS VERY POORLY MARKED. ON THE S SIDE OF RWY 24C, TXWY S WIDENS CONSIDERABLY. I CONTINUED ACROSS RWY 24C, CROSSED WHAT I BELIEVED WAS THE HOLD SHORT BAR FOR RWY 24C, AND STOPPED WELL SHORT OF WHAT I BELIEVED WAS THE HOLD SHORT FOR RWY 24L. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IN THE HABIT OF NOT TAXIING ALL THE WAY UP TO A HOLD SHORT BAR IF POSSIBLE. AN RJ HAD BEEN CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 24L. WHEN THAT ACFT PASSED US, TWR CLRED US ACROSS RWY 24L AND TOLD US TO CONTACT GND. AS I PROCEEDED TO CROSS RWY 24L, I NOTICED THAT THE SECOND HOLD SHORT BAR WAS ACTUALLY FOR ACFT HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 24C TAXIING THE OTHER DIRECTION. AT THAT POINT, I REALIZED I HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT FOR RWY 24L. WE CONTACTED GND CTL AND PROCEEDED TO THE GATE NORMALLY. NEITHER TWR OR GND CTL MENTIONED ANYTHING TO US, AND I BELIEVE THAT THEY DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE THAT WE HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT BAR. I WOULD ESTIMATE THAT I CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT FOR RWY 24L BY 5-8 FT. AFTER WE WERE PARKED, I DOUBLE-CHKED THE CLE GND CHARTS. I WAS WELL AWARE OF THE PROX OF RWYS 24L AND 24C AND THE RWY INCURSION 'HOT SPOT X' FOR TXWY S. WHAT I FAILED TO REALIZE IS THAT WHEN TAXIING SBOUND, THE HOLD SHORT FOR RWY 24L IS THE FIRST HOLD SHORT BAR YOU GET TO. I HAD MISTAKEN THAT BAR FOR THE HOLD SHORT FOR RWY 24C. INTUITIVELY, YOU WOULD THINK THAT WHEN EXITING A RWY, THE FIRST HOLD SHORT BAR YOU CROSS WOULD BE FOR THAT RWY. THIS IS NOT THE CASE IN CLE. IF I HAD PAID CLOSER ATTN TO THE ACTUALLY PAINTED MARKINGS, I WOULD HAVE NOTICED. THE HOLD SHORT LINES ARE DEPICTED ON THE 10-9 PAGE, BUT THERE IS NOTHING DEPICTING WHICH LINE IS WHICH. THE ONLY PLACE IT SHOWS THAT INFO IS IN THE INSET.
