Narrative:
During vectors after departure, cumulus clouds with occasional moderate chop in climb. On initial heading of 140 degrees a cell painting solid red for about 6 mi diameter was directly ahead. A turn to 060 degrees was given along with a climb to 13000 ft. On that heading and near top of climb a request was made for a 20 degree right turn to avoid the turbulence of a buildup. The request was denied and there was no room for a left turn. We entered the top of the cloud at leveloff altitude. We immediately encountered a strong uplift. Even though the throttles were at idle we did not stop the altitude gain until 13700 ft. We confirmed with ATC that we had gone through our assigned altitude and complied with his request to return to 13000 ft as soon as it was possible.
