Narrative:

Climbed out in flight crew mode for slightly slower than normal climb out for turbulence. ATC could not let us deviation for WX, because of traffic. Turbulence was occasionally moderate, but 270 KTS, and then eventually .56 mi in the climb was fine. ATC asked our airspeed just as a updraft took us to about 3500 FPM and 240 KTS at FL230. First officer replied 230 KTS, even though that is just what we were at for that moment. ATC lectured us about climbing out at a slow airspeed.
