Narrative:
An aircraft arrived for layover check. #1 tire worn beyond limits, went to parts house, ordered tire specifying aircraft number and type. Soon received B767-300ER tire. Aircraft is used for domestic flts. We questioned, among ourselves, if we should order another tire specifying domestic. Another amt adamantly stated that the 'er' tire was acceptable to install on the aircraft, that it is ok to put an 'er' tire on domestic but not to put a domestic tire on an 'er' aircraft. We inspected the new tire, all other tires on were 32 ply, with the same speed rating, and similar part number. We installed the tire, aircraft taken to line, tire discovered, tire rechanged. No delays. I received note from line maintenance, I discussed it with shift manager. Whether or not that the tire change was acceptable is still be researched.
