Narrative:
After holding short of runway 17C at taxiway er, we were cleared to cross runway 17C with an airplane on short final runway 17C. As we were taxiing past the hold short line, tower changed their mind and told us to hold short of the runway even though we were past the designated hold line. Our momentum was going to carry us forward to what I thought would put our nose sticking out onto runway 17C. I instructed the first officer to inform tower we were unable to hold short and we would have created an unsafe situation. We had to continue across the runway. Shortly after that transmission, tower instructed the airplane about to land on runway 17C to go around. We were past the point of no return and tower accepted that. Taxied to the gate with no other problems noted. Supplemental information from acn 588551: I might have been able to hold short of the runway edge if I had crunched down on the brakes and sent everybody forward in their seats but I wasn't willing to do that. I was uncomfortable being forward of the hold line with my nose possibly sticking out and getting violated. I feel like their reply is putting the responsibility for this event on us not moving quickly enough and I'm not going to accept that.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 FLT CREW IS CLRED ACROSS RWY 17C AT DFW WITH AN ACFT ON FINAL RESULTING IN A GAR, WHEN UNABLE TO STOP AFTER INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY DFW.
Narrative: AFTER HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 17C AT TXWY ER, WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 17C WITH AN AIRPLANE ON SHORT FINAL RWY 17C. AS WE WERE TAXIING PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE, TWR CHANGED THEIR MIND AND TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY EVEN THOUGH WE WERE PAST THE DESIGNATED HOLD LINE. OUR MOMENTUM WAS GOING TO CARRY US FORWARD TO WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD PUT OUR NOSE STICKING OUT ONTO RWY 17C. I INSTRUCTED THE FO TO INFORM TWR WE WERE UNABLE TO HOLD SHORT AND WE WOULD HAVE CREATED AN UNSAFE SIT. WE HAD TO CONTINUE ACROSS THE RWY. SHORTLY AFTER THAT XMISSION, TWR INSTRUCTED THE AIRPLANE ABOUT TO LAND ON RWY 17C TO GO AROUND. WE WERE PAST THE POINT OF NO RETURN AND TWR ACCEPTED THAT. TAXIED TO THE GATE WITH NO OTHER PROBS NOTED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 588551: I MIGHT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY EDGE IF I HAD CRUNCHED DOWN ON THE BRAKES AND SENT EVERYBODY FORWARD IN THEIR SEATS BUT I WASN'T WILLING TO DO THAT.
