Narrative:

I was flying parachutists out of X49. At 2000 ft, I said 'tpa approach, aircraft X off of X49 2000 ft for 10000 ft with jumpers.' normally a squawk code is assigned. Controller acknowledged, asked for aircraft type. I do not recall if he said 'radar contact.' I should have asked for a squawk code, but I knew he had me on mode C because he did 1 or 2 calls to me. At 7000 ft I was in a climb, northbound. The controller said, 'aircraft X traffic off your left wing, sbound on airway.' I said, 'looking.' about 20 seconds later, I said, 'no contact.' he repeated his previous call. About 5 seconds after that, I looked to my 12 O'clock position, and saw a baron banking to the right to avoid me. I could read part of his tail number. I said to controller 'traffic definitely in sight.' I then asked him if he was in contact with the traffic. He replied that the traffic was IFR on an airway handled by ZMA. I said 'that was very close.' he replied: 'well, you are on a busy airway!' 1) I believe I should have asked for squawk code. 2) I failed to see traffic. 3) controller should have called traffic much sooner. 4) controller called traffic at my 9 O'clock position rather than 12 O'clock position. 5) ZMA should have vectored the IFR traffic away. 6) controller should have said 'traffic alert.' factors: I may have just turned north, confusing the controller. The controller was not busy, in my opinion. A second jump plane (jump #1) was above me, carrying jumpers. I was near a busy VOR.

Narrative: I WAS FLYING PARACHUTISTS OUT OF X49. AT 2000 FT, I SAID 'TPA APCH, ACFT X OFF OF X49 2000 FT FOR 10000 FT WITH JUMPERS.' NORMALLY A SQUAWK CODE IS ASSIGNED. CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED, ASKED FOR ACFT TYPE. I DO NOT RECALL IF HE SAID 'RADAR CONTACT.' I SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR A SQUAWK CODE, BUT I KNEW HE HAD ME ON MODE C BECAUSE HE DID 1 OR 2 CALLS TO ME. AT 7000 FT I WAS IN A CLB, NBOUND. THE CTLR SAID, 'ACFT X TFC OFF YOUR L WING, SBOUND ON AIRWAY.' I SAID, 'LOOKING.' ABOUT 20 SECONDS LATER, I SAID, 'NO CONTACT.' HE REPEATED HIS PREVIOUS CALL. ABOUT 5 SECONDS AFTER THAT, I LOOKED TO MY 12 O'CLOCK POS, AND SAW A BARON BANKING TO THE R TO AVOID ME. I COULD READ PART OF HIS TAIL NUMBER. I SAID TO CTLR 'TFC DEFINITELY IN SIGHT.' I THEN ASKED HIM IF HE WAS IN CONTACT WITH THE TFC. HE REPLIED THAT THE TFC WAS IFR ON AN AIRWAY HANDLED BY ZMA. I SAID 'THAT WAS VERY CLOSE.' HE REPLIED: 'WELL, YOU ARE ON A BUSY AIRWAY!' 1) I BELIEVE I SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR SQUAWK CODE. 2) I FAILED TO SEE TFC. 3) CTLR SHOULD HAVE CALLED TFC MUCH SOONER. 4) CTLR CALLED TFC AT MY 9 O'CLOCK POS RATHER THAN 12 O'CLOCK POS. 5) ZMA SHOULD HAVE VECTORED THE IFR TFC AWAY. 6) CTLR SHOULD HAVE SAID 'TFC ALERT.' FACTORS: I MAY HAVE JUST TURNED N, CONFUSING THE CTLR. THE CTLR WAS NOT BUSY, IN MY OPINION. A SECOND JUMP PLANE (JUMP #1) WAS ABOVE ME, CARRYING JUMPERS. I WAS NEAR A BUSY VOR.
