Narrative:
I was assigned to #1 engine change. After removal of engine, inspector found cannon plug backshell broke just forward of starter duct. I removed and replaced cannon plug and backshell and sealed bolt heads with part 18-4 alternate for (BMS5-63) firewall sealer. Upon sealing bolt heads, I had grabbed a can of sealer from one of our cabinets and saw it was expired. So I placed it on my tool box and went back to our other cabinet and grabbed a different can and used it. The next morning, FAA inspector came in and found the sealer on my tool box. He asked if we knew that it was expired. I said yes and that I had gotten a different can from our lockers. I was notified on one of my days off that I may need to notify company for using a sealer from an uncontrolled area or expired. I'm not sure what was the situation, uncontrolled area or expired.
