Narrative:
Center controller gave us a 20 degree right turn for traffic and said 'make it a tight turn.' I turned off the autoplt and immediately commenced a turn. Simultaneously, we got a TA. The target was at 11 O'clock position, amber, and closing at our altitude. While still turning, the target turned red and we got a TCASII climb RA. I advanced the power to toga and pulled up. In doing so, I caused some g-loading, and the airframe momentarily buffeted. I rolled wings-level, and decreased the climb rate. After 500-600 ft of climb, I leveled and we got a 'clear of conflict' aural message. The flight attendants and several passenger were standing at the time. Other passenger were understandably concerned or upset. The captain made an explanatory PA within 3 mins. I have recommended simulator training in high altitude RA maneuvers to my company. Currently, we only have 'cbt' for TCASII and it is inadequate. With domestic rvsm coming, this situation may well become more common place. Better training is in order.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN A320 FLT CREW RECEIVES A TCASII RA. THE CREW CLBED CAUSING SOME G-LOADING WITH PAX STANDING UP, AND IS CONCERNED THAT THEY DON'T RECEIVE ADEQUATE TRAINING IN HIGH ALT MANEUVERING.
Narrative: CTR CTLR GAVE US A 20 DEG R TURN FOR TFC AND SAID 'MAKE IT A TIGHT TURN.' I TURNED OFF THE AUTOPLT AND IMMEDIATELY COMMENCED A TURN. SIMULTANEOUSLY, WE GOT A TA. THE TARGET WAS AT 11 O'CLOCK POS, AMBER, AND CLOSING AT OUR ALT. WHILE STILL TURNING, THE TARGET TURNED RED AND WE GOT A TCASII CLB RA. I ADVANCED THE PWR TO TOGA AND PULLED UP. IN DOING SO, I CAUSED SOME G-LOADING, AND THE AIRFRAME MOMENTARILY BUFFETED. I ROLLED WINGS-LEVEL, AND DECREASED THE CLB RATE. AFTER 500-600 FT OF CLB, I LEVELED AND WE GOT A 'CLR OF CONFLICT' AURAL MESSAGE. THE FLT ATTENDANTS AND SEVERAL PAX WERE STANDING AT THE TIME. OTHER PAX WERE UNDERSTANDABLY CONCERNED OR UPSET. THE CAPT MADE AN EXPLANATORY PA WITHIN 3 MINS. I HAVE RECOMMENDED SIMULATOR TRAINING IN HIGH ALT RA MANEUVERS TO MY COMPANY. CURRENTLY, WE ONLY HAVE 'CBT' FOR TCASII AND IT IS INADEQUATE. WITH DOMESTIC RVSM COMING, THIS SIT MAY WELL BECOME MORE COMMON PLACE. BETTER TRAINING IS IN ORDER.
