Narrative:

Visual approach runway 6, bhm. Vectored around rain shower/thunderstorm over downtown birmingham (2 mi from field). Smooth ride down final in and out of light rain. No rain at airport with winds given 150 degrees 7 KTS. Expected normal landing, however, over runway began to experience severe wave type turbulence. (Like riding a surf board). This, combined with aircraft full aft baggage, tended to add to the instability. I elected to just go around. Tower thought I had landed, but had never touched down. Also experienced downdraft during early phase of go around. Requested landing on runway 36, which was normal in all respects. Bhm changed runways 6-24, following this.
